Unlocking the City #01.

SENSESCAPES
Live-event held at the British Music Experience, The O2, London, October 1st 2009.

Unlocking the City is a pilot trying to involve young people in the making of places. – Inviting them into the design process we are aiming to engage youngsters in the future development of their environment and to excite them about their city.

To start with, Unlocking the City is exploring and utilizing everyday sounds created by/in our cities as a design tool for the shaping of places and urban experiences. As such, we are proposing to acknowledge sound as a distinct – and a positive matter of built design.

The pilot is developing in 3 stages:

#01.: Sensescapes

The Sensescapes event was a first attempt to introduce the aims and ideas behind our Unlocking the City project to a wider public. – The Sensescapes-workshops, pilots testing light and sound to evoke immediate interactions and experiences in and with our surroundings.

Exploring light – a familiar and acknowledged element of spatial design – and ideas on sound in tandem has been a means to highlight and understand the potential of everyday sounds as a key element and design tool for the shaping of atmospheres, social identity, and emotions within our urban sites.
