The Listening Project
Case Studies as part of Unlocking the City #02.
Background:
Unlocking the City is a pilot:
• trying to involve young people in the making of places. – Inviting them into the design process we are aiming to engage youngsters in the future development of their environment and to excite them about their city.
• exploring and utilizing everyday sounds created by/in our cities as a design tool for the shaping of places and urban experiences. As such, we are proposing to acknowledge sound as a distinct – and a positive matter of built design.
On the 1st of October Unlocking the City had its kick off with SENSESCAPES – a one-day live event on Architecture and the Senses [and the matters of sound and light for spatial design and experiences] held at the BME, The O2.
The Listening Project takes Unlocking the City into its next phase, testing #02.: – ‘How to depict sound as a spatial experience?’ and, ultimately, #03.: ‘How to build & experience aural architecture?’
#02. The Listening Project:
‘How to depict sound as a spatial experience?’
Following the outcomes and responses to our Sensescapes event held in early October, the British Music Experience [BME], The O2 commissioned SPACEPILOTS to go further with our investigation and develop a series of case studies on interactive sound maps and aural guides for their educational department.

Together with 40 Spatial Design students of Chelsea College of Art we have been exploring ways to incorporate and explore sound as part of the National School Curriculum – not only for the subject of music, but relevant across the whole curriculum in Key Stages 3 and 4.
The final outcome of this stage are a set of case studies for an ongoing archival database of sound recordings of Greenwich Peninsula and the BME website.
The focus is on the creation of guides for schools/BME’s visitors to explore the area around The O2. The guides are tailored to be uploaded and made accessible on the BME webpage as part of their learning program.
The studies include interactive sound maps and –tracks; tactile sound explorations; sound books; ..
The case studies are forming the basis of Unlocking the City, #02 – Realization:
SPACEPILOTS is currently working on the realization of interactive online tools that will allow young people to explore, share and
s h a p e the ways everyday sounds influence our perception of city.
